Why does my fireplace smoke only on windy days?

The trees are taller than your chimney

The rule of thumb — a flue clearing the roof by three feet and any obstruction within ten by two — was written for chimneys standing above their surroundings. When a house is ringed by tall hardwoods the chimney is almost never the tallest thing around, and wind tumbling over that canopy dives straight into the flue. Raising the chimney to clear the trees is often the only real fix.
Creosote is the multiplier
Because wood heat is popular here and the lots keep it that way, creosote buildup is Fairview's leading chimney-fire risk — and it's also a smoke problem. A flue narrowed by creosote moves less exhaust, so it has even less power to resist a downdraft. A fall sweep before the season does double duty: it removes the fire hazard and restores the draft the fire needs to push back against wind. We won't cap a dirty flue and call it solved.
Propane and wood, done right
