Why does my new electric fireplace have a smell when the heater runs?
That's normal and temporary. The heating element ships with a thin protective coating of oil and dust from manufacturing, and it burns off the first few times the heater runs — giving a faint hot-dust or slightly plastic smell. It clears within a few hours of heater use. Running flame-only mode without the heater won't smell at all.
It's the element curing, same as a space heater
An electric fireplace like the Dimplex IgniteXL makes heat by pushing air across a coil, and that coil comes with a light manufacturing residue. The first several times it heats up, that residue cooks off — a faint dry, hot-dust odor, and occasionally a whiff of plastic from the housing warming for the first time. Any new electric heater does this. It fades a little each time and is gone within a few hours of total heater run time.
Speed it up and keep it separate from the flame
Run the heater on high in a ventilated room for the first hour or two to get the curing over with, and crack a window if the smell bothers you. Worth knowing: the flame effect and the heater are independent on these units. The LED flame produces no heat and no smell, so if you just want ambiance during break-in — or year-round in warm weather — run flame-only and skip the odor entirely.
When to be concerned
Break-in smell is faint and it fades. What's not normal: a sharp burning-plastic or electrical smell that's getting worse, any buzzing or hot spot at the plug, or a scorched smell from the outlet. Electric fireplaces should run on their own dedicated outlet, not a power strip or extension cord — an overloaded circuit is a real hazard.
