Why does the flame on my linear gas fireplace look uneven along the burner?
An uneven ribbon flame almost always comes from the burner media — fire glass or stones pushed unevenly over the ports — or from ports partly blocked by dust and spider webbing. A burner that isn't dead level, or a gas line that's undersized at the far end, can also do it. Corrected and cleaned, the ribbon evens out.
A ribbon flame is only as even as its ports
A linear fireplace makes its clean line of fire from a long row of small burner ports, and every one of them has to stay clear and evenly fed. Pile the fire glass a little deeper at one end, let a summer's worth of dust and spider webbing settle into the ports, and the flame goes patchy — tall here, low or dark there. On these units the decorative media is the usual offender: it's easy to nudge glass or stones over the ports while cleaning, and even a thin drift over the ribbon smothers the flame in that spot.
When it's more than the glass
If the media is spread correctly and the flame is still lopsided, we look deeper. The burner may not be sitting dead level — a linear burner that's even slightly off will run stronger at the low end. The ports themselves may be clogged from the off-season, the classic problem where spiders and dust settle into the orifices over summer. And on longer runs, especially propane out in Fairview, Candler, or the cabins, an undersized or overtaxed gas line can starve the far end of the burner when the fireplace or another appliance is calling for gas. A clean ribbon needs full, steady pressure across its whole length.
What we do about it
This is a straightforward service visit. We pull and re-level the media to the manufacturer's spec — glass and stones go in a specific depth and pattern for a reason — clean the burner ports and air path, check manifold pressure, and verify the gas line is sized for the load.
