Why won't my gas fireplace light when it's very cold outside?

In Brevard we start by pulling the permit with Transylvania County and inspecting the whole gas train, because the cold rarely acts alone here — Brevard's 80-plus inches of annual rain rusts dampers, valves, and connections that then fail on the first cold night. Propane cabins add a vapor problem on top, so we check the fuel side and the hardware together.

Moisture is the hidden partner

Transylvania County is one of the wettest places in the East, and that soaking wet-season air corrodes the metal parts a gas fireplace depends on — the valve, the pilot assembly, the damper on an older masonry unit. A corroded contact or a rust-stiffened thermocouple works in mild weather and then can't produce voltage when it's frigid. So when a Brevard fireplace won't light in the cold, we look hard at what the humidity has been quietly doing all year, especially in crawl spaces and chimney chases prone to damage.

Propane out at the cabins

Downtown Brevard homes vary, but the cabins around Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and up toward Pisgah Forest are propane country. Liquid propane has to boil into vapor to feed the burner, and a low or undersized tank does that poorly on a single-digit morning. Keeping the tank topped off through winter is the simplest guard — [natural gas versus propane in WNC](/guides/natural-gas-vs-propane-in-wnc) explains why the fuel behaves so differently once it's cold.

Permitted and pressure-tested

Any gas diagnosis or repair in Brevard is licensed work — a mason or handyman legally can't connect or test the fuel side in North Carolina. We pull the Transylvania permit, meet the inspector, and pressure-test the line, which protects your homeowner's insurance and a future sale. We're 40 minutes southwest. Call (828) 545-0525.
