Will converting my wood fireplace to gas improve my indoor air quality?

Yes, and Black Mountain's own weather is part of the reason. The Swannanoa Valley's morning temperature inversions trap cold air — and anything in it — close to the ground, so wood smoke that would otherwise disperse hangs around your home. Converting to gas means there's no smoke to be trapped in the first place: clean heat, no particulate.

When the valley holds the smoke down

On clear nights the Swannanoa Valley runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville because cold, dense air pools on the valley floor. That same inversion caps woodsmoke near the surface instead of letting it climb and clear — so an open fireplace in downtown Black Mountain or on a wooded Montreat lot can leave both indoor and neighborhood air smokier than the fire seems to justify. A gas conversion removes the source entirely.

Shaded lots, downdrafts, and indoor soot

Montreat's heavily wooded, shaded lots keep chimneys cool and moisture-prone, and a cold flue behaves like a plug — smoke rolls back down and into the room on start-up. Sealing the firebox with a gas insert stops that backflow completely and vents its own exhaust outside. A gas log set is the simpler, lower-cost route for looks, but the sealed insert is the one that actually cleans up the air you breathe.

Gas mains, Buncombe permit, 15 minutes out

Black Mountain sits on the natural-gas mains, so the fuel side is usually straightforward. Connecting it is licensed work in North Carolina — a mason or showroom legally can't — and we pull the Buncombe County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. We're just 15 minutes east of our Emma Road showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
