Will my fireplace put out less heat on propane than on natural gas?

No — a Mills River fireplace on propane makes the same rated heat as one on a natural-gas main. Out here on the large rural lots amid farmland and forest, many homes run propane, and that's no disadvantage — the appliance is engineered to a BTU rating and reaches it on either fuel once the conversion and pressure are set correctly.

Propane country between the farms

Mills River spreads out across open valley and wooded acreage, and the gas main doesn't reach most of it, so propane is the workhorse. That suits the place: propane is more concentrated than natural gas, so a tank home burns less volume for the same heat, and refills stretch further per BTU. For a farmhouse great room we'll often set a Kozy Heat or Napoleon unit configured for propane; your supplier sizes and fills the tank, and we handle the regulator, the piping, and the appliance connection. The heat is identical to what the same unit would make on a city gas line.

The open valley is made for outdoor fire

Mills River's open, flat valley is ideal for outdoor living, and a propane gas fire pit — say a Napoleon Uptown square — throws real warmth on the cool mountain evenings that linger most of the year. Plan it in late spring, before entertaining season. Whether it's an indoor fireplace or a buried outdoor line to a pit, propane delivers full rated output; the trick is right-sizing the injectors and verifying pressure so the flame doesn't over-fire or run lazy.

Permitted with Henderson County

An outdoor gas line has to be buried and outdoor-rated, and in North Carolina only a licensed gas contractor can legally run it — a hardscaper who builds the patio can't connect the fuel. We pull the Henderson County permit, meet the inspector, and pressure-test the line. Mills River is about 25 minutes south of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home estimate.
