Are Vermont Castings stoves still as good as they used to be?

What changed is ownership and manufacturing — the brand consolidated after being acquired in 2014 — and some longtime owners feel the older units had heavier castings. Vermont Castings built its name on cast-iron stoves like the Defiant and Encore — iconic, top-loading, beautiful. In 2014 the brand joined the Hearth & Home Technologies family — the same parent behind Heat & Glo, Heatilator, and Majestic — and manufacturing later consolidated within the group. That history is why you'll hear old-timers argue the golden-era stoves were built differently. It's a fair debate — but the current stoves are still real cast iron, and modern emissions rules pushed the fireboxes to burn cleaner and more efficiently than the originals.
How to judge one for your home
Reputation aside, a wood stove lives or dies on condition and fit. A well-maintained current Vermont Castings will heat a room beautifully; a neglected one — any brand — will frustrate you.
