Can a gas fireplace be converted between natural gas and propane?
Yes — in Asheville proper you're usually on the natural-gas mains through Montford, North Asheville, and downtown, so most conversions here run the other direction: a propane-set unit bought elsewhere, or carried in from a cabin, gets switched to natural gas. It's licensed work with a manufacturer's kit, and since we're headquartered on Emma Road, it's a short trip.
Which way the swap usually goes here
Because Asheville sits on gas-main service across most of its older neighborhoods and its newer South Asheville builds, the fireplace itself is rarely the problem — the fuel setup that came with it is. We see units that shipped configured for propane, or that a homeowner carried down from a second place up the mountain, and they burn wrong on city gas until the orifices and pressure are matched. Propane runs at higher pressure through smaller orifices, so a wrong-fuel unit on natural gas starves and burns lazy and yellow.
The reverse shows up too — someone buys a place outside the mains and needs their natural-gas unit reset for propane before it'll heat right.
Bring the model number to Emma Road
Every conversion starts with your exact model, because the kit is model-specific and a handful of appliances are built for one fuel only. Our showroom is at 629 Emma Rd, minutes from most of the city, so you can bring a photo of the rating plate and we'll confirm whether yours converts before anyone touches it.
One accountable licensed company
From there it's contained work: we swap the orifices, reset the pilot and pressure, then pressure-test the line and verify clean combustion. In North Carolina a showroom or a handyman legally can't make that fuel connection — we're a licensed gas contractor, we permit it with Buncombe County, and we meet the inspector. No stitching a job across a showroom and someone you then hunt down to make it burn. Call (828) 545-0525.
