Can a gas fireplace run on propane if I don't have natural gas service?

Yes — and around Marshall it's frequently propane, since Madison County's mains are limited. The bigger question here is often how to route and vent the appliance on a steep, tight lot, not the fuel itself. A propane tank, a regulator, and a line configured for LP give you the same fireplace, set up correctly for the terrain.

Steep lots change the plan, not the fuel

Marshall is built against the mountainside — narrow multi-story downtown buildings and hillside homes with limited access, hard up against the French Broad gorge. That terrain complicates chimney routing and draft far more than fuel choice does. A sealed direct-vent unit is often the right call precisely because it vents out a sidewall on a coaxial pipe and doesn't need a tall, well-drafting masonry chimney fighting a gorge downdraft. On the many properties here without a gas main, that unit runs on propane, and it burns identically once it has LP orifices and the correct pressure. We plan the vent path for the site in front of us, not from a catalog, so it works on the lot you actually have.

Damp gorge air and a licensed line

The French Broad gorge keeps evenings cool and damp, and cold, moisture-laden air is hard on open fireboxes and masonry — one more reason sealed propane units do well here. Whatever the site throws at us, the gas side is ours and no one else's: in North Carolina, running or extending a gas line is licensed work, and a mason or handyman legally can't connect the fuel. We run and pressure-test the LP line, set the regulator, pull the Madison County permit at the Marshall office, and meet the inspector. Marshall is 25 minutes north of our Asheville showroom.
