Can an older fireplace, hearth, or flue contain asbestos?
It depends on the home and the part of Candler. Newer subdivisions here — full of basic builder-grade fireboxes — are past the asbestos era, but older homes out in Hominy Valley can still hide it around the hearth. Suspect spots are old gas-log ember material, firebox board, flue cement, and hearth mastic. Undisturbed it's harmless; a remodel that cuts into it is the danger.
Two fuels, two housing ages
Candler splits a few ways. Closer to Enka-Candler you're near Asheville's natural-gas reach, while the rural stretches of Hominy Valley and the Pisgah Highway area are propane country. The town's fast-growing new subdivisions were built well after asbestos left hearth products — those decorative builder-grade fireboxes aren't a concern. But the older homes scattered through the valley are, and Hominy Valley's natural bowl already has owners leaning toward clean-burning sealed appliances for air quality. Knowing your home's decade is the fastest way to know whether to worry, and when those older homes get upgraded, the old firebox is where suspect material lives.
Upgrade carefully
A lot of Candler owners want to trade a decorative builder box for a real heat-producing insert within a few years of moving in. If the home is newer, that's a straightforward swap; if it's an older valley house, the tear-out can disturb decades-old board, cement, or mastic. In a pre-1980 home, test suspect material before cutting.
