Can an older fireplace, hearth, or flue contain asbestos?
Yes — Fairview is propane-and-wood country on big wooded lots, and its older homes can hide asbestos around the hearth. With so much wood heat here, it shows up in old flue insulation, cement-asbestos flue pipe, firebox board, and hearth mastic more than in gas-log embers. Left undisturbed it's inert; a chimney job or stove swap that cuts into it is the hazard.

Out on Fairview's large rural lots — Cane Creek Valley, Garren Creek, the Charlotte Highway corridor — many homes run on propane rather than a gas main, and wood heat is genuinely popular, driving steady demand for stoves and inserts. Those wooded lots make wood a natural choice, but they also mean older chimneys and flues that may carry asbestos-containing insulation or cement-asbestos pipe. The classic Fairview chimney worry is creosote buildup without a fall sweep — and while a sweep is cleaning, that's a moment old flue materials can get disturbed.
Sweep, test, then upgrade
The rule doesn't change with the fuel: in a pre-1980 home, treat old flue pipe, insulation, board, and mastic as suspect and leave them intact until they're tested. Undisturbed material isn't shedding fibers, and wood-flue insulation and old pipe wrap are easy to overlook until a sweep loosens them.
