Can cracked fireplace glass be replaced, and does it need to be special glass?

Window and plate glass shatter at these temperatures, no exceptions. Ceramic and specially tempered glass aren't interchangeable, and a sealed gas panel is a combustion barrier that has to seal. A wood-stove door glass carries its own high-heat rating and a gasket that seals against smoke. Match the wrong glass and you risk a shatter — and on a sealed unit, exhaust in the room.
