Can cracked fireplace glass be replaced, and does it need to be special glass?
Yes, and in Swannanoa we're doing a lot of it. As storm-damaged Grovemont-area homes get rebuilt, folks are adding new fireplaces and stoves — and any cracked panel, whether on a new install or a survivor, has to be the correct ceramic or tempered OEM glass. On a sealed unit that panel is the safety barrier, so we match it exactly and confirm the seal.
Rebuilds mean new units — and old ones to check
Swannanoa's recovery from recent storm damage has driven a wave of new fireplace and stove installs, especially around the 1940s-to-60s homes in Grovemont with their original masonry fireboxes. New sealed units are going into rebuilt houses, and older survivors are getting a hard look. Meanwhile the river-valley fog, cold-air pooling, and damp air that define this stretch are tough on masonry and on the metal clips that hold a glass panel square — so cracked glass shows up on both the new and the old.

Whether it's a brand-new install or a hand-me-down, the glass is ceramic or specially tempered, and on a direct-vent unit it seals the combustion chamber from the room. A crack takes it out of service until it's replaced with the manufacturer's exact panel and gasket — natural gas runs the Swannanoa mains, and a plain sheet still shatters. New unit or not, the spec is the spec.
