Can I install a gas fireplace insert myself?

The liner is the hard part

An insert is a sealed appliance that fits into your old wood firebox, but it can't just vent into the existing masonry flue — it needs its own correctly sized stainless liner running from the unit all the way to the top of the chimney. Size that liner wrong and the insert won't draft properly; instead of pulling combustion products up and out, it can spill them back into the room.

That's also why the chimney gets inspected first. If the flue has cracked tiles or a failing crown, we address that before a liner ever goes in.

Plus the licensed gas connection

On top of the liner, the insert has to be connected to fuel — and running or extending that gas line is licensed work in North Carolina, permitted and pressure-tested. A homeowner legally can't do that piece. Between the liner sizing, the venting, and the fuel connection, an insert is one of the more technical hearth installs, not a bolt-in.
