Can I run my own gas line to a fireplace?

The law, and the reason behind it

Steady Flame is a licensed gas-piping contractor, and running gas line is the core of what that license exists to protect. A showroom, a mason, a handyman, or a general contractor can build you a gorgeous fireplace, but they legally can't connect it to fuel — and neither can a homeowner. We run the line, pull the permit with your county, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector.

That process isn't bureaucracy for its own sake. A gas line that leaks doesn't give you a second chance. The permit and pressure test are how we prove it's tight before anyone lights a flame.

Natural gas or propane — same rule

It makes no difference whether you're on the natural-gas mains through Asheville and Hendersonville or on propane out in Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins. Propane adds its own layer — regulator, pressure, and orifice sizing all differ, and propane burns hotter per unit — but the licensing requirement is identical. We coordinate the tank with your supplier and handle the piping and appliance setup on our end. Either fuel, it's licensed work.

What DIY costs you even if it 'works'

Say a homeowner rigs a line and it seems fine. It still voids the appliance warranty and can void your homeowner's insurance, and it will flag on a home-sale inspection — with no licensed party accountable for it.
