Can I install an electric fireplace myself?

A plug-in electric unit — say a Dimplex wall-mount — is the exception on this whole list. No fuel, no combustion, no venting means none of the licensed gas work that makes other fireplaces off-limits to DIY. Mount it securely, plug it into a suitable outlet, and you're done. Just don't share a circuit that's already loaded with other high-draw appliances; a heater wants room on the line.

For a lot of folks who just want the flame and a little warmth, this is a perfectly reasonable weekend project.

Where it stops being a DIY job

The moment it's hardwired, recessed into a wall, or built into a feature wall, it changes character. A permanent unit usually wants a dedicated circuit, and running that is a licensed electrician's work — not a homeowner's. Building it into a wall also means honoring the unit's clearances so it sheds heat safely. Set your expectations honestly

Whatever the install path, know what you're getting: an electric fireplace is about 5,000 BTU of supplemental warmth for a room up to roughly 400 square feet — beautiful flame, real coziness, not whole-house heat.
