Can I put a fireplace under a window?
Sometimes, but a window usually forces a design change. A gas or wood fireplace needs clearance to combustibles and, if it's direct-vent, a clear place to terminate outside — a window right above complicates both. Heat rising can also stress the glass. An electric or a low, linear unit is often the cleaner answer under a window. We measure before committing.
Why the window changes the math
Two things fight with a window. First, clearance to combustibles — window trim, sills, and especially curtains have to stay a set distance from the firebox and its heat. Second, venting: on a direct-vent gas unit the exhaust cap can't sit too close to an operable window, because code keeps combustion products away from anything you open and breathe through.
Put a window directly above a sidewall termination and you've got a conflict. Older single-pane glass can also crack from rising heat, and vinyl frames can discolor over a season of use.
What actually works under a window
