Can I put a gas fireplace in my basement?

Yes — and in Mars Hill the first question is which fuel you're on. Near the university you may have a gas line; out in the Spring Creek and Gabriels Creek valleys it's usually propane or wood. Either way, a sealed direct-vent gas fireplace heats a basement cleanly, vents out a wall with no chimney, and lights at the flip of a switch.

One of the colder spots we serve

Mars Hill sits high and cold, and a below-grade room here holds winter longer than the rest of the house. For the university-area rentals, an easy-to-use gas fireplace makes a lower level genuinely livable for tenants who won't tend a wood fire — flame on demand, no ash, no smoke. We size the unit up a touch for the elevation, since the usual BTU-per-square-foot rule of thumb climbs in the Madison County mountains, so the room actually keeps up with the cold rather than just taking the edge off.

Fuel and vent, matched to the property

On a propane property up Spring Creek we set the regulator and LP-matched orifices; on a gas line near town we extend from the meter. The connection and pressure-test are ours as a licensed gas contractor — no showroom or handyman can legally make them in NC. From there the vent goes out a sidewall on a walkout basement, common on these sloped lots, or carries up through a buried room, with a power vent for a long run. We pull the Madison County permit and meet the inspector — the showroom is 30 minutes north. Call (828) 545-0525.

Rural backup heat

Out in these valleys, wood heat has always been the backstop — but a direct-vent gas fireplace with millivolt ignition gives the same grid-independent warmth with none of the hauling or cold-start smoke. During an outage it keeps the basement warm, which is why so many WNC households added power-optional heat after Helene.
