Can I remove my fireplace and chimney entirely to open up the wall during a remodel?
In Asheville it comes down to what kind of chimney you have. The original masonry stacks in Montford and North Asheville often carry roof load and run to a footing, so pulling one is a structural job for a mason or GC. The newer clean-face gas boxes in South Asheville sit in a metal chase that lifts out cleanly. Either way, our part is capping the gas first.
Two very different Asheville chimneys
Walk from a 1920s Montford foursquare to a South Asheville new-build and you're looking at opposite demo jobs. The old brick stack is masonry all the way down, tied into the framing and sometimes helping hold the roof line, so no course comes off until an engineer or general contractor confirms what's load-bearing. A factory-built firebox in a newer home lives inside a framed chase with a metal flue; once the fuel's disconnected, that assembly comes out without touching the structure. Knowing which one you've got changes the whole scope of the remodel.
The fuel side is ours
If a gas fireplace, insert, or log set sits in that firebox, the line gets shut off at the source, disconnected, and capped, permitted through Buncombe County and pressure-tested before demo starts. In North Carolina that's licensed gas work; a demo crew or handyman legally can't do it, and it's never DIY. The backup-heat question
Before you commit, remember an open wall gives you nothing when the grid goes down. Across Buncombe the homes that rode out Helene warm were the ones with a working hearth.
