A lot of Candler's growth is recent subdivisions with basic builder-grade fireboxes that were installed for looks more than heat. That works in your favor on a remodel: a factory-built decorative unit sits in a framed metal chase, so once the gas line is disconnected the assembly comes out without a structural project. If you happen to have an older masonry stack, that's the one that needs an engineer or GC to confirm what's load-bearing before demo.
Gas or propane, capped under permit
Natural-gas service reaches parts of the Enka-Candler corridor while properties out toward Pisgah Highway run on propane, so the shut-off depends on your fuel. Natural gas caps at the line; propane means shutting down at the tank and regulator and coordinating the supplier. Either is licensed gas work in North Carolina, permitted with Buncombe County and pressure-tested before demo. A demo crew or handyman legally can't do that piece, and it's never DIY.
