Can I remove my fireplace and chimney entirely to open up the wall during a remodel?
In Black Mountain it depends whether your chimney is structural. Many downtown and Montreat homes carry full masonry stacks that tie into the framing, so pulling one is a mason-or-GC job, not just hearth work. The shaded, damp Swannanoa Valley lots don't change that. What we handle is shutting off and capping the gas line under Buncombe County permit before anything comes down.
Damp valley, solid masonry
Montreat's heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded and moisture-prone, and the Swannanoa Valley's morning inversions run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville. None of that makes a masonry chimney easy to remove; if anything, older stacks up here have soaked up decades of damp. The question is still structural: does the chimney help carry the roof or run to a footing through the framing? An engineer or GC answers that before the first course comes off. A newer metal-chase firebox is the easier removal.
Our part: the fuel
If a gas fireplace or insert sits in that firebox, we shut the line off at the source, disconnect it, and cap it, permitted with Buncombe County and pressure-tested, before demo. In North Carolina running or capping gas is licensed work; a mason or handyman legally can't, and it's never DIY. Black Mountain is 15 minutes east of our Emma Road showroom, so timing the cap ahead of your remodel crew is easy.
