Can I remove my fireplace and chimney entirely to open up the wall during a remodel?
In Brevard, moisture is usually the backstory. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, Transylvania County chimneys spall, crowns crack, and dampers rust, so sometimes a stack genuinely is failing and coming down makes sense. Even then, it's a structural call for a mason or GC. What we own is the gas side: capping the line under permit before demo.
When the weather makes the decision
Brevard's rainfall is punishing on masonry. Chimney chases and crawl spaces here take on moisture that spalls brick and rusts steel from the inside, and after enough wet seasons a stack can be too far gone to save. That's a real reason some Brevard homeowners remove rather than repair, but a deteriorating chimney is still masonry that may be tied into the structure. An engineer or general contractor confirms what's load-bearing before it comes off; we don't guess on that.
Propane and gas lines out here
Plenty of Brevard's downtown homes are on natural gas while the cabins toward Connestee Falls and the Pisgah Forest edge run on propane. Either way, if there's a gas fireplace or log set in that firebox, the fuel gets shut off, disconnected, and capped, permitted with Transylvania County and pressure-tested. On a propane system that also means coordinating the tank and regulator with your supplier. Capping gas is licensed work in North Carolina; a demo crew or handyman legally can't touch it.
Before you demo
