What you can safely handle yourself
If you want to save us time on install day, there's real prep you can do. Shovel out the ash and cold coals, take up the hearth rug, clear the mantel, and move furniture back so we have a straight path from the fireplace to the door. If it's a wood stove or wood insert with no gas involved, you can pull the loose trim and surround panels if they lift off by hand. All of that is welcome and shaves time off the visit. Just stop short of unbolting anything structural or touching the venting.
Where the line is — and why it's the law
The moment gas is involved, it's ours by law. Disconnecting and capping a gas insert's fuel line is licensed gas work in North Carolina — a homeowner doing it themselves risks an open line, and it can void the permit and your homeowner's insurance if something goes wrong down the road. We shut the gas, disconnect, cap, and pressure-test as part of the removal. The other hazard is plain weight: a cast-iron insert or stove can run three to five hundred pounds of dead weight in an awkward spot, and we've been called to homes where a DIY drag gouged the hardwood or cracked the hearth tile. A wood unit's chimney liner is not something to yank on from below, either.
