Can I sit near a burning fireplace in a showroom to test whether the smell bothers me before buying?

Yes — that's exactly what our Asheville showroom is for. We keep live units burning, and if you're smell-sensitive, sitting in front of one before you commit is the smartest thing you can do. Call ahead to (828) 545-0525, tell us the type you're weighing — vented logs, direct-vent, vent-free, or wood — and we'll have it lit so you can judge with your own nose.

Come test with your own nose

Our showroom at 629 Emma Rd in Asheville runs real fireplaces, not just cold display models, so you can stand or sit close and find out how a burning unit actually reads to you — smell, heat, flame, the works. It's the single best way to settle a smell worry, and we encourage it. Call first at (828) 545-0525, Monday through Friday 8 to 5, and name the units you're considering so we can have the right ones burning when you arrive — a gas set takes a few minutes to warm up and settle into its steady flame.

What a showroom burn does and doesn't tell you

A live burn is honest about most things, but know two limits. A brand-new unit off the floor carries a brief break-in smell — manufacturing oils curing off the burner — that fades after the first few hours, so what you smell on a fresh unit isn't its permanent character. And if you're eyeing vent-free logs, remember their real-world smell depends on your air at home: because a vent-free flame sends everything back into the room, it burns off whatever's in your air — household dust, pet dander, candle soot — in a way a clean showroom can't reproduce. A sealed direct-vent unit, by contrast, sends all its exhaust outside — in the showroom you'll smell essentially nothing, which is the whole point.

Burn them side by side

The most useful thing we can do is light two or three options together so you're comparing, not guessing — vented gas logs with that tall, ambiance-first flame, a sealed direct-vent fireplace, a vent-free set, even a wood unit — and let your own reaction pick the winner. If you already know smell is a deal-breaker, tell us up front; we'll steer you toward direct-vent or vented, which keep combustion out of your room air, and away from anything that would bother you. No pressure and no upselling — we'd rather get you the fireplace you'll actually enjoy than the priciest one. Call (828) 545-0525 or just come by.
