Can my old builder-grade prefab (zero-clearance) wood fireplace take an insert, or does it need a full unit replacement?
In Mills River, fuel shapes the answer as much as the firebox does. Many homes out on these large rural lots run on propane, not a gas main — so if your builder-grade prefab won't take an insert, the replacement path is usually an LP unit. And plenty of decorative boxes here simply aren't listed to hold an insert.
Propane changes the plan

That matters two ways: a gas insert or replacement has to be set up for LP — propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures, and a wrong-fuel setup soots — and connecting that fuel is licensed work. We permit it with Henderson County, set the regulator and piping, and pressure-test the line. The tank itself we coordinate with your supplier.
Insert or replacement
Whether an insert is even an option comes down to the rating plate inside your prefab matching the insert manufacturer's tested list; many builder boxes were never rated for one.
