Those covers rust from the seams and pool water, so up top what you're really inspecting is the cover, not a cap. Owners here often want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years of moving in.
Hominy Valley's natural bowl also traps air, which is part of why folks in Enka-Candler and Sand Hill lean toward clean-burning, sealed appliances — and a sound cap or cover with an intact screen keeps the flue clear so those units draft the way they should, so the cap and screen do real work here, not just decoration.
