Original metal, decades on
Clyde is full of 1960s through 80s ranch-style homes, and a lot of them still have their dated original fireplaces — and the factory chase cover or cap that came with them, quietly rusting up on the roof for decades. Those are prime candidates for two things at once: an insert upgrade to make the old firebox actually heat, and a fresh cap or cover to replace the tired original.
When we drop a sealed insert into one of these fireplaces, the liner and the rain cap get sized and replaced together as part of the job, so you're not left with an oversized old cap sitting over a new, smaller liner. Doing it as one piece of work is how you avoid a mismatched, leak-prone top, and the humidity here is unkind to metal that isn't up to it.
Pigeon valley humidity does the damage
Clyde shares the cold-air drainage of neighboring Canton and Waynesville, and river humidity in the Lower Pigeon valley rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than in drier country. Galvanized caps simply don't last in that air — they corrode, the screen fails, and the mount works loose — so stainless is the durable answer here, checked as part of any sweep or inspection.
