Do chimney caps need to be inspected or replaced?

After the water came through

Canton sits on the floor of the Pigeon River valley, and the recent flooding did more than soak floors — it left hearths and the gas appliances that vent through them needing a careful, top-to-bottom check. A cap knocked loose, a flue packed with storm debris, and a crown that took on water are all common finds, and none of them fix themselves.

Getting a mill-town home fully back means looking at the whole chimney, cap included: is it still sealing, is the screen intact, is the crown sound. It's an easy thing to overlook in the middle of a bigger repair, and an easy thing to get right while everything else is already being addressed, and it keeps the next hard rain out where it belongs.

Valley fog rusts caps early

Even in a calm year, Canton's valley-floor mornings bring fog and dampness that pool low and rust dampers and chimney caps sooner than most people expect. Galvanized steel doesn't stand a chance long-term in that air — it corrodes, the screen gives out, and the mount loosens. Stainless is the honest answer here, and the cap gets checked as part of any sweep or inspection.

Where a gas or propane appliance vents through that flue, running and reconnecting the fuel isn't handyman work — in North Carolina it's licensed, and we permit it with Haywood County and pressure-test the line before it's lit.
