Propane plus altitude is two calculations
Out here in Transylvania County — the cabins around Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest, the properties past the gas mains — propane is the norm. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs its own orifices and pressures to begin with. Elevation then leans that mixture out further, so a high-altitude kit on an LP unit is a de-rate layered on top of a fuel setup. Getting both right in one pass is the difference between a clean flame and years of soot and nuisance shutdowns.
Wet air is the other local factor
Brevard's 80-plus inches of rain a year won't change whether you need an altitude kit, but it does punish the chimney chases and crawl spaces that gas venting runs through — cracked crowns, spalled brick, rusted dampers.
