Which gas fireplace brands work without electricity during a power outage?
Any gas fireplace with a millivolt (standing-pilot) ignition or a battery-backup igniter will light and heat with the power out. Valor is the standout — its units run on zero electricity, no blower, no circuit board. Napoleon offers battery-backup ignition across much of its line, and most direct-vent and vent-free millivolt units keep the fire going grid-down.
Why ignition type is everything
A gas fireplace makes its own heat; the only question is whether it can light and stay lit without house current. Two designs pull that off. A millivolt system uses a standing pilot and the tiny voltage from a thermopile to open the gas valve — no outside power at all. An electronic-ignition unit needs power, but many add a battery backup that lights the fire when the grid is down. Either way, you get what we call power-optional heat.
The brands built for it
Valor is the flagship here. Its H5 and similar radiant units run on millivolt with no blower and no board — Valor's whole design philosophy is a fireplace that keeps throwing warmth through a full grid-down week. Napoleon builds battery-backup ignition into its everyday line, so its best-selling Ascent gas fireplaces light in an outage. Kozy Heat, Superior's vent-free models, and other direct-vent units we carry are available with millivolt controls too. After Helene knocked out power across WNC for days, these are the units homeowners tell us they were grateful for.
What still won't work without power
The fire lights and radiates heat, but the blower doesn't. A blower only moves warm air around faster; the fireplace still heats the room by radiation without it. Electric fireplaces, by contrast, are fully dead in an outage, and pellet units need power (battery backup covers only short outages). If grid-independent heat is your priority, we'll steer you to millivolt or battery-backup gas — or wood, the gold standard. Call (828) 545-0525.
