Which gas fireplace brands work without electricity during a power outage?

In Arden, the move is to turn a tired open masonry fireplace into an outage-proof heater with a sealed gas insert. On Arden's natural-gas service, a millivolt Valor insert runs on zero electricity and a Napoleon insert lights on battery backup — both heat the room when the power's out.

From heat-loser to heater

Arden's 1980s and '90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland mostly have open masonry fireplaces, and an open firebox pulls warm room air straight up the chimney — it can actually run a net heat loss. A sealed gas insert changes the math: inserts commonly run 70 percent efficient or better, and set into your existing opening with a correctly sized liner, one becomes a real heater. Choose millivolt or battery-backup ignition and it lights grid-down, too, so the room stays warm through an outage.

Natural gas, licensed and permitted

Arden rides the natural-gas mains along the Hendersonville Road corridor, so most inserts here run on natural gas — no tank to manage. Running or extending that gas line is licensed work in North Carolina; a mason can rebuild your firebox but legally can't connect the fuel. We do both sides of the job, pull the Buncombe County permit, and pressure-test the line, so you're not stitching the work across a showroom and a separate contractor you had to find yourself.

Grid-down, and the one exception

When the power's out the insert lights and radiates heat; only the blower waits for electricity to circulate air faster. Electric fireplaces, by contrast, are dead in an outage. Since Helene's outages, that's the reason most Arden calls start. If backup heat is your reason for the upgrade, we'll steer you to a millivolt or battery-backup gas insert.
