The vent-free options we carry
Superior is our go-to for vent-free fireboxes. Its VRT-series units are 36-inch, 40,000 BTU vent-free fireplaces running near 99.9% efficiency on a millivolt system with a built-in ODS safety shutoff. With no flue at all, essentially all of that heat stays in the room — which is exactly the appeal.
Alongside the fireboxes, we can spec and install ventless gas log sets to convert an existing firebox into a supplemental heater. Both are real options; both come with the same honest caveats.
The honest rules on vent-free
Vent-free is efficient, but it's not consequence-free. It adds moisture and humidity to your indoor air, it has firm Btu limits tied to the size of the room, and it includes that oxygen-depletion sensor for a reason. It's also restricted or prohibited in some applications and jurisdictions — bedrooms and bathrooms in particular.
Our stance: vent-free is safe when it's correctly sized, properly installed, maintained, and used within the rules. Vent-free vs. vented logs
The quick way to think about it: vented gas logs are for ambiance — a tall, realistic yellow flame with the damper open, and most of the heat going up the chimney. Vent-free is for heat — damper closed, nearly all the warmth staying in the room.
