Can I still get parts for a Desa or Vanguard vent-free heater?
Usually yes. Desa International — which made Vanguard, Comfort Glow, and FMI vent-free heaters and gas logs — went under around 2009, but those vent-free lines didn't disappear on you. Companies still serve that market with compatible units and parts, and a lot of the components cross-reference to current equivalents. The safety-critical pieces, especially the ODS pilot, must match the original spec.
The Desa story in one paragraph
Desa was a big name in vent-free through the '90s and 2000s — heaters and gas logs under Desa, Vanguard, Comfort Glow, Reddy Heater, and FMI. The company hit financial trouble and folded around 2009.
The vent-free assets didn't vanish, though. Companies like ProCom Heating stepped into that market, and a lot of the parts are still made or cross-referenced. So a Vanguard or Desa vent-free heater in a Candler or Fairview cabin is often perfectly serviceable.
The vent-free caution
Vent-free heaters have their own rulebook: they add moisture to the room, have Btu limits by room size, and rely on an ODS (oxygen-depletion sensor) pilot that shuts the unit off if oxygen drops. That ODS pilot is not a generic part — it has to be the correct one for that exact model, or the safety system is compromised.
This is exactly why we won't hand you a mismatched pilot, and why vent-free isn't allowed in bedrooms and bathrooms in many jurisdictions. If yours is acting up, get it looked at, not guessed at.
