Do fireplace brands make high-altitude kits, and do I need one for a mountain home?
Clyde sits at 2,612 feet, high enough that more gas brands cross their high-altitude threshold than in the valley towns below — so a de-rate kit is more likely here than in Asheville, though still not automatic. Most local work is upgrading dated fireplaces to modern inserts, and that swap is when we match the orifices to your model.
Insert upgrades at 2,600-plus feet
A lot of Clyde's 1960s-to-80s ranch homes still run dated fireplaces that are ready for an insert, and at over 2,600 feet the elevation deserves real attention on that upgrade. Several brands that need no adjustment down in the Asheville valley start requiring a leaner orifice near where Clyde sits. It's still model-specific — we won't assume from the elevation alone — but the odds tilt toward a high-altitude kit more than they would lower down the mountain.
River humidity is a venting matter
Clyde shares the cold-air drainage of Canton and Waynesville, and the lower Pigeon Valley's river humidity rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than you'd expect. That's a venting-condition issue, separate from the altitude math, but it's worth checking in the same visit — an old firebox going insert into a damp, corroded flue has more than orifices to sort out.
