Do oxygen depletion sensors on vent-free fireplaces still work reliably at high mountain elevations?
In Arden the oxygen depletion sensor works reliably at 2,150 feet on the area's natural-gas mains — nowhere near a derating altitude. The real Arden question is what to do with all those tired 1980s-90s open masonry fireplaces in Royal Pines and Skyland: vent-free logs to add heat, or a sealed insert that turns the firebox into an actual heater.
Drafty open fireboxes, two fixes
Those open masonry fireplaces pull warm air out of the room and lose most of their heat up the flue. Vent-free logs are one way to change that, and the ODS on a Superior VRT4036 works fine here — oxygen drops, the pilot flame lifts off the thermocouple, the valve closes. But a sealed gas insert usually heats better and adds no moisture to the room, so in many Skyland and Royal Pines homes that's the upgrade we recommend instead.
Room size decides vent-free
If vent-free logs are the direction, sizing is everything — the unit's output has to match the room, and code keeps it out of bedrooms and bathrooms. A carbon-monoxide alarm goes in regardless, because the ODS watches oxygen and nothing else. At 2,150 feet none of that is about altitude; it's about matching a modern appliance to a firebox that was built decorative, not efficient.
