Do oxygen depletion sensors on vent-free fireplaces still work reliably at high mountain elevations?

In Candler the oxygen depletion sensor works reliably at 2,200 feet, well under any derating altitude. But Hominy Valley's natural bowl traps air, and that's a genuine reason to think twice about vent-free: a vent-free unit burns its combustion products into the room, while a sealed appliance keeps indoor air cleaner — which matters more here than the elevation does.

A valley bowl and indoor air

Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl that holds air, and that's why clean-burning sealed appliances appeal here. A vent-free fireplace, by design, releases its combustion by-products and moisture into the room; its ODS guards against oxygen depletion but does nothing about air quality or humidity. For a lot of Candler homes we lean toward a sealed direct-vent unit that vents everything outside — the same easy gas heat, cleaner indoor air. That's an honest recommendation, not an upsell.

New builds, and the fuel line

Candler's fast-growing subdivisions came with basic decorative fireboxes, and owners want real heat within a few years. The gas main reaches the Enka-Candler side, while older Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway properties still run propane — so setup depends on your fuel, and propane units have to be dialed to LP pressures or the ODS pilot soots. Either way, connecting fuel is licensed gas work. At 2,200 feet the sensor itself is never the limiting factor.
