Do oxygen depletion sensors on vent-free fireplaces still work reliably at high mountain elevations?

The sensor itself works fine at elevation — an ODS is a precisely tuned pilot flame that snuffs the gas valve when oxygen drops, and that physics doesn't quit at 3,000 feet. The real issue is thinner mountain air pushing the whole system closer to its shutoff threshold, which is why most vent-free manufacturers publish an elevation ceiling and why high-country units can nuisance-trip or lose approval entirely.

What an ODS is — and why altitude doesn't break it

An oxygen depletion sensor isn't electronics — it's a specially shaped pilot flame aimed at a thermocouple. When room oxygen falls, the pilot flame lifts away from the thermocouple, the thermocouple cools, and the gas valve slams shut. No circuit board, no battery, nothing to fail in a power outage. What thin air does change

Here's the honest part. The ODS was calibrated around near-sea-level air, and at elevation every cubic foot of air simply carries less oxygen. The whole system now operates closer to its shutoff line before the fire even lights. That's why vent-free manufacturers publish elevation limits and derating rules in the manual — check yours before assuming anything. Around Asheville, at roughly 2,200 feet, vent-free units generally behave. Push up toward Highlands, Cashiers, and the ridge-top homes past 4,000 feet, and you're in territory where units shut down constantly — or where the manufacturer never approved them in the first place. A safety that trips every evening isn't broken; it's telling you the appliance is in the wrong house.
