Do oxygen depletion sensors on vent-free fireplaces still work reliably at high mountain elevations?

In Brevard — propane country — a vent-free fireplace's oxygen depletion sensor works reliably at the town's 2,230 feet, thousands of feet below where thin air forces manufacturers to derate. Propane just changes the setup around it: the fuel burns hotter per unit and needs the correct orifice and pressure, or the ODS pilot fouls and the flame soots.

Propane and the pilot

Most Brevard homes and the cabins tucked up toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest run liquid propane, not a natural-gas main. A vent-free unit set up for the wrong fuel burns dirty and can nuisance-trip its ODS, so a Superior VRT4036 or a propane-country unit like the Kozy Heat Springfield 36 has to be dialed to LP pressures. That's licensed gas work — we set the regulator and appliance and coordinate the tank itself with your propane supplier, not a delivery crew.

The wettest county we serve

Transylvania takes 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture already sits in the crawl spaces and chimney chases here. A vent-free fireplace adds still more water vapor to the room by design — it's how the technology works — so in a damp Brevard house we're careful about sizing and often lean toward a sealed direct-vent unit that sends its combustion, and its moisture, straight outside. The ODS protects against oxygen depletion; it does nothing about humidity or condensation.

Transylvania permit, 40 minutes out

We pull the Transylvania County permit and pressure-test every line — a mason can build you a beautiful firebox but legally can't connect the fuel. Brevard sits about 40 minutes southwest of our Asheville showroom, so we plan propane jobs to make the trip count and keep a run of common parts on the truck. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment and we'll match unit, fuel, and room.
