Do WNC burn bans apply to wood-burning fire pits and outdoor fireplaces?

Waynesville and Hazelwood back up against Pisgah National Forest and mile after mile of unbroken timber, which puts a lot of homes squarely inside the Forest Service's 100-foot woodland zone. When the state declares a ban, an open recreational fire in that zone is exactly what it's meant to prevent.

The higher elevation cuts both ways: your heating season runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's, but the same cool, dry air that follows a cold front also primes leaf litter and cured grass to catch.

Pulling the right ban and the right permit

Bans here may come from the Forest Service, from Haywood County, or from the Town of Waynesville, and any of them can be in force alone. For a wood fire, check the active order with the Haywood County fire marshal first. For a gas fire feature, we pull the Haywood County permit and meet the inspector, because in North Carolina running that gas line is licensed work.
