Does a fireplace insert need a chimney liner to be safe in an old chimney?
Yes — but Fletcher deserves a caveat most towns don't: if your old chimney is masonry, a full-length stainless liner sized to the insert is required to make it safe, no exceptions. Many of Fletcher's 1990s subdivisions, though, have factory-built prefab fireboxes rather than masonry — a different animal, where the insert path uses the manufacturer's listed venting, not a masonry liner. We sort out which you have first.
Masonry vs. prefab — it changes everything
Fletcher's builder-grade 1990s fireplaces are often zero-clearance prefab metal boxes, not brick-and-clay masonry. That distinction decides the whole job. In a true masonry chimney, an insert needs a right-sized stainless liner to the top because the old flue is far too wide and too cold for a sealed insert's exhaust. In a prefab, an insert has to be a listed combination the manufacturer allows, vented per its instructions — the wrong move there is its own hazard. A camera scan and a look at the firebox tell us which path is safe for your home.
Gas country, easy fuel
Fletcher sits right on the natural-gas mains along the I-26 corridor, so a clean-face gas insert is a natural upgrade here — flame at the flip of a switch, no wood to haul. When the appliance goes into a masonry chimney, the liner comes with it; the sealed insert makes a small, cool exhaust that a wide old flue would choke and condense into creosote. Running or extending that gas line is licensed work we permit and pressure-test — a showroom legally can't.
