Does high elevation affect how my gas fireplace burns?

Arden's 1980s-90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland mostly have open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of the room, and at 2,150 feet that draftiness — not altitude — is what makes them burn poorly. Drop in a sealed gas insert with the right high-altitude orifice and you fix the draft and the thin-air question in a single move.

The drafty open firebox

The open masonry fireplaces that came with Arden's Royal Pines and Skyland houses are tired and drafty — they send warm room air straight up the flue and can actually run a net heat loss. That's a design problem, and no orifice adjustment touches it. A sealed gas insert changes the fireplace entirely: inserts commonly run 70 percent efficient or better, so what was a heat drain becomes a real heater. Where altitude does show up

On a gas unit that's already in, altitude reveals itself as soot or a lazy flame when the orifice is wrong or the fuel was converted without high-altitude parts. Arden sits on the natural-gas mains, so most units here are fine once set up correctly — the elevation is modest and the fuel is consistent. It's the conversions and the mis-orificed installs, not the 2,150 feet by itself, that cause trouble.
