Does high elevation affect how my gas fireplace burns?

Black Mountain sits at 2,405 feet, and the Swannanoa Valley's morning inversions can run it 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville — cold enough that a gas fireplace here earns real scrutiny. The air is thin enough to push a poorly-orificed burner rich, though a sealed direct-vent unit on the natural-gas mains usually shrugs the altitude off.

Cold mornings, cold flues

The valley's temperature inversions and late-spring frost dates mean Black Mountain mornings start colder than the numbers a few miles downhill suggest, and a cold chimney is its own problem: cold air sits in the flue like a plug and fights the draft on an open or B-vent fireplace before it ever lights well. That's a draft issue, distinct from altitude. A sealed direct-vent unit is immune to it — the reason we steer most new installs here toward direct-vent.

Montreat's shaded, damp lots

Up toward Montreat, heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded, and moisture-prone, which is hard on masonry chimneys and keeps hearths in use much of the year. Some of those homes are off the mains on propane, adding an orifice requirement to the elevation one. Either way, at 2,405 feet the high-altitude spec is worth honoring rather than assuming a factory default will do.
