Does high elevation affect how my gas fireplace burns?

At nearly 2,650 feet, Waynesville is high enough that altitude stops being a footnote — many manufacturers' high-altitude derate or orifice spec kicks in right around this elevation, so a gas fireplace set up for lower ground can run rich, soot up, and give back a slice of its rated heat exactly when Haywood's longer, colder season leans on it hardest.

High enough to cross the threshold

This is the difference between Waynesville and the lower valley towns: at 2,644 feet you're often past the point where a manufacturer calls for a high-altitude orifice or a rated-heat derate. Hazelwood's drafty open hearths

The older Hazelwood housing stock leans on its hearths hard, and a lot of those are drafty open masonry fireboxes that lose more heat up the chimney than they put in the room. There, a sealed gas insert with the right liner solves the heat loss and the altitude question together. Some of Waynesville runs propane rather than the mains, which adds its own orifice requirement on top of elevation.
