Gas insert vs pellet insert — which is better for my fireplace?

In Marshall, where homes cling to steep hillsides and tight lots complicate both chimney draft and service access, a gas insert is usually the more dependable pick — a sealed unit and proper liner fix the draft, and there's less machinery to fail up a hard-to-reach hollow. A pellet insert solves the draft too, but adds moving parts and needs electricity the gorge doesn't always keep on.

Terrain shapes this decision

Marshall is built against the mountainside — narrow multi-story downtown buildings, homes on steep hillside lots, access that's rarely easy. Two things follow. First, draft is finicky here: the French Broad gorge and tight, tucked-in lots make open fireplaces prone to downdrafts and smoke. A sealed insert of either type, on a correctly sized liner, largely solves that by controlling the air path. Second, service access is a real consideration — when a truck can't easily get to you, the appliance with fewer things to break is the safer long-term bet, and that's the gas insert.

Fuel, power, and the licensed line

Madison County runs mixed-fuel, natural gas in spots and propane elsewhere, and a gas insert handles either once it's set up correctly — orifices and pressures matched to the fuel. Running and permitting that line with Madison County, then pressure-testing it, is licensed gas work; a mason or showroom legally can't finish it in North Carolina. The clincher up here is power: the gorge's damp evenings and storm exposure mean outages, and a gas insert with millivolt or battery-backup ignition keeps heating through them while a pellet unit — auger, board, blowers — needs the grid to do anything.
