How do I find out if natural gas is available on my street?

Across most of Asheville the answer is yes — natural-gas mains run through the older core and out the main corridors, so a hookup is often a short tap rather than a long extension. It still varies by block: pockets of Montford, North Asheville, and the wooded fringes sit past the last main. Confirm your exact address first.

Old masonry, new gas — both common here

Asheville's housing tells the story. The historic homes of Montford and North Asheville were built around original masonry fireplaces, and most of those blocks now sit on natural-gas mains — which makes converting a drafty open firebox to a sealed, efficient gas insert realistic. South Asheville's newer construction was designed for clean-face gas from the start. Either way, being on the mains is what makes gas a short conversation instead of a long one; the further you drift from the established corridors, the more the picture changes.

Pinning down your specific block

The fastest read is right next door — a metal meter clamped to a neighbor's wall usually means a main runs your street, while a tank in the yard means propane. Yellow paint or flags left after an 811 locate are another clue. For a definite answer, give the natural-gas utility serving the Asheville area your address and ask whether there's a main on your street and what a service tap involves. We're headquartered right here at 629 Emma Rd in West Asheville, so we can swing by and look in person.

Buncombe permit, licensed line

Whatever the utility says, the connection itself is licensed work. In North Carolina a showroom or a mason can sell you a beautiful firebox but legally can't run the fuel to it — we can, and we pull the Buncombe County permit, run and pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector.
