How do I know if my house has natural gas or propane?
Arden sits on the natural-gas main — Royal Pines, Skyland, and the Biltmore Park area generally show a wall meter and a gas-utility bill rather than a propane tank. Many of the 1980s-90s homes here still have their original open masonry fireplaces, which may or may not have had gas added. Check for a meter, then check the firebox.
Established subdivisions, mostly on the main
Arden's neighborhoods — Skyland, Royal Pines, Glenn Bridge, Avery Creek — largely tie into the natural-gas main, so a metal meter mounted on the wall is the usual sight and a yard tank is uncommon. The Biltmore Park retail and office district is firmly on gas as well. That said, plenty of these 1980s-and-90s homes were built around a plain open masonry fireplace, and whether a gas line and log set were ever added to that firebox varies house to house.
From drafty open box to real heater
Those tired open fireplaces are notorious for pulling heat out of the room instead of adding it, and Arden owners are steadily converting them to sealed gas inserts that actually warm the space. That upgrade depends on the fuel: nearly all of Arden runs natural gas, but the unit still has to be spec'd and orificed for it, and any rare propane property needs a different setup entirely. If a gas unit is already in place, its rating plate reads NG or LP behind the louver.
Fifteen minutes south, licensed for the line

The gas line is our lane and no one else's — a mason can face the fireplace in stone but legally can't connect the fuel in North Carolina.
