How do I know if my house has natural gas or propane?
Around Brevard, assume propane until a meter proves otherwise. The natural-gas main never reached most of Transylvania County, so downtown homes, the Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest communities, and the cabins toward Pisgah almost all run a yard tank. Find the tank — above ground behind the house or buried with a green dome — and you've found your fuel.
Where the tank hides in wet country
In Brevard the question is usually where the tank is, not whether you have one. Look for a horizontal white or silver cylinder on a pad behind or beside the house, or a green plastic dome poking a few inches out of the yard — that's a buried tank, popular here because it keeps the view clean. Brevard's 80-plus inches of annual rainfall is exactly why crawl-space regulators and buried lines need a licensed eye; standing water and rust are constant, and a corroded connection is not something to eyeball.
The rare Brevard exception
A few close-in downtown blocks may sit on a gas main, so don't rule it out entirely — check for a metal meter on the wall and a gas-utility bill instead of a supplier delivery. But out at Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and up the mountain roads toward Pisgah Forest, propane is simply the reality. It's a first-class fuel, not a consolation prize: propane carries more energy per cubic foot than natural gas, and a unit like Kozy Heat's Minnesota-built Springfield 36 heats a propane-country cabin beautifully.
Why it drives the whole install
Confirming propane up front shapes everything: the model, the orifice, the regulator, and the coordination with your supplier for the tank.
