How do I know if my house has natural gas or propane?
Candler is a real split, so don't assume. Traditional Candler — up Hominy Valley and along Pisgah Highway — is propane country, where the main never reached and a yard tank is standard. But the fast-growing newer subdivisions closer to Enka can sit on a natural-gas main. Look for a tank versus a wall meter to know which Candler you're in.

For years Candler was straightforward propane — the natural-gas main didn't run up Hominy Valley or out the Pisgah Highway area, so homes ran on tanks, and many still do. The wrinkle is growth: Candler is one of Asheville's fastest-expanding suburban areas, and some of the newer Enka-Candler subdivisions closer in reach natural-gas service. So the honest answer is to check your own lot — a horizontal white or silver cylinder means propane, a metal meter on the wall with a utility bill means natural gas.
The Hominy Valley air-quality angle
Hominy Valley sits in a natural bowl, and air quality is a real consideration here — part of why clean-burning sealed appliances, direct-vent gas or newer inserts, appeal to Candler homeowners over smoky open fires. Whether that sealed unit runs on propane or natural gas depends on your address, and it must be orificed to match; a propane fireplace run on a gas main, or the reverse, soots and misbehaves. The rating plate behind the louver names the fuel if the yard didn't settle it.
Buncombe permit, 15 minutes west
