How do I lock the fireplace controls so my kids can't turn it on?
Most handheld remotes have a child-lock function — a button combination that freezes the handset so pressing buttons does nothing. Beyond that, turn the wall switch off (or fit a locking, keyed switch), keep the remote out of reach, or turn the gas control to pilot or off. And remember the glass itself gets very hot, so a barrier screen matters just as much.
Lock the controls a few different ways
Start with the remote. Many handsets we see include a child-lock or keypad-lock — usually holding two buttons together — that makes the remote inert until you unlock it, so a curious kid mashing buttons gets nothing. If your fireplace runs off a wall switch, the simplest move is to flip it off when not in use, and for a real deterrent we can install a keyed or locking wall switch. You can also turn the appliance's gas control knob to PILOT or OFF, which means the burner can't light at all until an adult sets it back.
The bigger hazard is the hot glass, not the switch
Worth saying plainly: on a running gas fireplace the glass front gets hot enough to cause a serious burn in an instant, and it stays hot for a good while after you shut it off. Locking the on/off is only half the safety picture. If your unit didn't come with the mesh safety barrier screen, or someone removed it, put it back — it's there specifically to keep little hands off the glass. For homes with toddlers we also point families toward a freestanding hearth gate set a few feet out from the fireplace.
