How long does it take to install a gas fireplace insert?
Most gas insert installations are a one-day job — typically four to eight hours once we're on site. That covers pulling the old unit, running a stainless liner up the chimney, making the gas connection, setting the insert, and testing it. Jobs stretch to two visits when the gas line has to be extended, the flue needs relining work, or a permit inspection has to happen first.
What install day looks like
A gas insert going into an existing masonry fireplace is one of the cleaner jobs we do, and it's typically a **single day — roughly four to eight hours on site**. The sequence: pull and remove the old unit, sweep and inspect the flue, run a correctly sized **stainless liner** up the chimney for venting, make the gas connection, slide the insert into the existing opening, fit the surround panel that covers the gap, then light it, tune the flame, and test the blower and controls.
You get a sealed, efficient heater — inserts commonly run 70% efficient or better — in the footprint you already have.
What can push it to two visits
A few things add time. If there's **no gas line at the fireplace**, or the existing one has to be extended, that's added labor — and in North Carolina it's licensed work we permit and pressure-test. If the **flue needs relining or repair** that the inspection turns up, that's addressed before the insert goes in.
**Permit inspections** sometimes have to be scheduled with the county, which can split a job across two days. Tall or hard-to-access chimneys, and heavy custom surrounds, add time too. We flag all of this at the free in-home assessment, not on install day.
Using it — and the break-in smell
In most cases you can run the insert the same day once we've tested it and walked you through the controls — we don't leave until you know how to operate it. Expect a bit of **odor and haze during the first few burns**: that's the manufacturing oils and paint curing off, it's normal, and it clears in a few hours of running with the room ventilated.
